Survey of World Music
Music is a listener's art and this course concerns itself with just that: learning to listen. We will find ways to better understand and listen to many pieces and styles of music. Survey of World Music is a course designed to help you learn and better understand the skills required to hear music from varying places, times and cultures from around the world. The goal of the course is to provide the student a basic vocabulary of music, to teach musical and cultural literacy by examining a number of styles and traditions, to sharpen listening and critical skills, and to develop the ability to present ideas about music in writing.

Jazz History
This is an introductory course to the cultural, social, and musical history of jazz music and some of its derivatives.  We will explore the styles and structures of the music itself as well as some of the major creators and innovators that shaped the music.  We will also look at some of the surrounding art forms that helped create the music and some that came about because of the music.

Hip Hop and Context
This course examines the cultural phenomenon of Hip Hop through its development, history, communication style, dance form, music, and artistic process. Throughout the course students will explore the dynamics of race, gender, youth, and class. The course will employ various sources for analysis and information including: videos, commercials, movies, songs and other multimedia sources.
